Karen Ann Slivka, age 67 of Port Sanilac, passed away at home and went to be with her Heavenly Father on December 30, 2019. She was surrounded by her family. Karen was born on July 17, 1952 to the late Warren John Sr. and Novita Claudine Bachschmidt in Brown City, Michigan. Karen was the third born of seven children, Warren Jr., Gary, Nancy, Mark, Patricia, and Peggy. She grew up on the family dairy farm in Marlette, MI and was a 1970 graduate of Marlette High School. She also attended Midwestern Baptist College.
Karen was an active member of the community. She held a prominent role in her church community, as the pastor's wife and the pianist for over 46 years. Karen also served as a member of the board for both Project Blessing of Carsonville, MI and the Sanilac Community Symphonic Band. Karen had a love for music; she played several different instruments and could play most any instrument she picked up. She was a dedicated participant of both the Sanilac Community Symphonic Band and Three Minute Band. Karen also enjoyed singing with local groups and her daughters in church. Karen enjoyed helping those in need. She was a caregiver for the majority of her life and also an avid quilter. She found many ways to share her talents with others. When she was not helping others you could find her walking the shores of Lake Huron, looking for Petoskey stones.
She is survived by her husband the Reverend Paul Slivka, daughters Christine (Benjamin Kogut), Jennifer (Roy Beckner), Heather Slivka, and Rebecca (Jeremy Garn); grandchildren Ian and Liam King; siblings Warren Jr. (Connie), Gary (Natalie), Nancy (Thomas Hood, Sr.), Mark, Patricia and Peggy Bachschmidt; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents Warren John Sr. and Novita Claudine and nephew Jason Bachschmidt.
The family will receive friends at the Apsey Funeral Home of Deckerville, MI on Thursday, January 2nd, from 3-8PM and on Friday, January 3rd from 10AM with services starting at 11AM.
Memorial tributes may be made to the Sanilac Community Symphonic Band or to Project Blessing of Carsonville.
